Scott Payne’s law enforcement career began in 1993 with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked as a patrol officer before moving into narcotics and vice investigations. Early undercover assignments involved nerve-wracking street buys, including purchasing narcotics despite his appearance being far from that of a typical user. “I was terrified,” Payne recalls, emphasizing the pressure from experienced narcotics seniors watching his every move. Payne later pursued a career with the FBI, motivated by better pay prospects and professional growth. The FBI application process was rigorous, including an intense polygraph lasting several hours. He highlights the thoroughness of the FBI’s undercover training, especially the use of sleep deprivation to prepare agents for the mental and physical stress they’ll face in the field.
