Following Vybz Kartel’s release after 13 years in prison, Mr. Vegas shared his perspective on why Kartel can never be crowned the "King of Dancehall." Vegas emphasized that dancehall is more than just a sound—it’s a complete package involving authentic rhythm, performance, songwriting, and the traditional elements like live bands. He argued that Kartel, while immensely popular and influential, represents a newer genre that deserves its own classification rather than the classic dancehall title.

Vegas named artists like Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks, who embody the essence and authenticity of dancehall’s roots, as true kings of the genre. He also touched on the connections between African rhythms, Afrobeat, and dancehall, explaining that these musical forms share common African origins rather than being mere imitations. For Vegas, the 90s dancehall era remains unmatched, characterized by its distinct grooves and production style that define authentic dancehall music.
